Principal Architect in Software Development Organization

 

With my IP networking background and proficiency to grasp, understand, document, teach and share very complex Service Provider IT solutions, I quickly filled a void in Allscripts Software Development organization and am now the trusted Principal for planning and implementation of more real world test environments, where SW can be continuously developed with improved quality before deployed to General Availability for thousands of Healthcare Electronic Health Record systems used for hundreds of thousands of patients.

 

What started with successful implementation of a very static $2.2M private cloud environment has evolved to Public Cloud (Azure) where we move to an OPEX model of superior flexibility.  The Azure POC I am leading is now influencing moving PRODUCTION environments into Azure, following the best practices I am authoring.

·   Lead Azure IaaS infrastructure planning, design, implementation for Healthcare IT cloud hosted web applications and services as a POC for my company.

·   Organized and ran a successful Proof of Concept for 4 major SW solution components into Azure (ARM) using V2 Portal and PowerShell RM cmdlets with focus and emphasis on secure infrastructure design.

·   Run 2x weekly meetings with Microsoft to raise concerns and issues preventing adoption of Azure and request new features required.

·   Opened and manage dozens of Microsoft premiere support cases for my team, sharing knowledge gained with the entire team.

·   Liaison to Hosting Operations and Allscripts IT department for wider adoption of my design as a company best practice.

·   Documented very detailed implementation guides for deploying many Azure IaaS environment aspects including:

o   Infrastructure: VNets, UDR Routing and IP Forwarding, DMZ establishment, policy and Virtual Firewall Appliances (Barracuda WAF and NGF), secure access using Virtual Network Gateways (S2S IPsec VPN and ExpressRoute) and Jump Boxes, IaaS AD/DNS forests with integration to public DNS using Azure DNS Zones and DynDNS Registrar, Load Balancers and Application Gateways (HTTP and HTTPS with SSL Offload), VM Deployment and configuration, Storage Accounts, KeyVault, Recovery Services Vaults, IaaS SQL Always On Clusters, Data encryption (at rest and in motion), Log Analytics (OMS).

·   Developing a continuous deployment best practice using Hybrid mode TFS 2015 Update 2 Release Manager and general ARM/DSC automation.

·   Documented the production deployment reference architectures for all of our existing Hosted healthcare IT solutions and mentor QA leads on the build out of emulated hosted environments.  If you walk around our office, you will see my Visio diagrams on everyone’s desk, blow up on Manager’s walls, and used every day for troubleshooting and SW development.

·   Starting to develop a guide for key operational flows with failure point analysis which can be leveraged by Command Center and NOC personal and technical enablement teams (DevOps).

Any attempt to summarize 12+ years of numerous accolades for success in Network Integration and Test, TME, Business Development, Consulting Systems Engineering, and Sales Channels support would be futile. I would instead like to summarize by saying my secret to success at CSCO was dedication, persistence, hands on lab activities which I documented and shared in a way which could be massively scaled.   When I left (voluntary ER separation) I had forum posts with >50,000 views and was holding weekly Webinars for channel partners with 500 attendees.  Ask me about Hawaii with John Chambers.

I honestly thought I would retire in beautiful Boca Raton, FL with Siemens and spent 13 years of my career there in a very challenging and therefore one of the most empowering/rewarding jobs I held in my life.  There was no limit to what I was willing to do to help the 3rd place US vendor of Class4/5 C.O. switches gain market share from what I knew about the industry I grew up in. And I DID IT ALL.  If the spinoff company I voluntarily joined worked out, I would have still been there.   But that same experience is what gave me what I needed to join Cisco in NC, so I am happy and always think fondly of Siemens.   Unisphere Solutions (Spinoff) System Test on VoIP (1 Year)

Working for Northern Telecom in the NYNEX territory after they sold 100 DMS100/200 family switches (to them alone) was a wonderful experience for me.   It is also what allowed me to get out of NYC as they were located in Westchester County.  Leveraging all I learned deploying the FIRST DMS100 in Brooklyn NY while working for NY Tel gave me an unfair advantage here, but this is the point in my career where I started to learn that knowing more than you peers allows you to advance in respect and credibility IF YOU SHARE.  And in sharing, you are recognized as a leader.  And I became a country wide leader interacting with all their regions as an expert.   Software Systems Engineer (1 Promotion) ·               BNR Integration for FOA of new features into NYNEX ·               Assigned to NYNEX (White Plain region) responsible to work with network translations administrators to integrate initial switch configuration to 23 class 4/5 switches ·               Company-wide expert on  Centrex, Equal Access, TOPS & SS7 signaling leveraged for presales and post cutover support ·               Provided on site cut-over site support for 6 DMS100 switch implementations. ·               NYNEX presales support for DMS100 Centrex offering (IBN)

Maintenance Engineer (3 years; 1 Promotion)

·               Test and Analysis Committee Chairman responsible to perform all acceptance testing on DMS-100/200 switches to replace electromechanical and #1ESS switches in NY City (Brooklyn & Queens). 

·               Performed first cutover of DMS100 in NYC and later manned that same C.O. during several month union strike.

·               Contributing member of Interdepartmental Cutover Committee with recommendations and requirements for subsequent deployments.

Field Engineer (2 years)

 

I was an Aeronautical Engineer working on the FA-18 Hornet with a Secret Clearance.  It was a dream job out of college.   But $19,000 / year wasn’t allowing me to support myself or the long commute from Bklyn to L.I. in a car that got 4MPG J  Since the project was being reorganized, we were all going to be required to move to Missouri (relocation) to get closer to the Jet manufacturer.  Not what I signed up for.   I left with plenty of notice that I couldn’t relocate at that point in my life or at that wage. Notice the subsystem I was working on.  This was 1982.  You know what industry was going “Digital” at that time.

 

·               Integration test and field support for Navy ILASS project (FA-18 Avionics support); held top secret clearance.

·               Microprocessor Controlled Digital Interface Subsystem responsibility.

·               Trained with development and test teams to be placed on Navy aircraft carriers to support the system in the field.
